COMMINTMENT WITH MANTAS ECUADOR PROJECT
Manta Rays are iconic animals and a focal species for marine tourism in Ecuador.
Manta Rays are iconic animals and a focal species for marine tourism in Ecuador. Unfortunately, due to their long lifespans and low reproduction rate, their population is some of the most affected by human pressures such as fishing and wildlife trading.
The project “Mantas Ecuador”, a project of MEGAFAUNA MARINA DEL ECUADOR FUNDATION, was created with the purpose to conserve the Ecuador's oceanic Manta Ray population for the sustainable benefit of local Ecuadorians communities as well as those who are interested in this amazing animal.
Our goal with Manta Ecuador Project is to support the activities that they promote in the Galapagos Islands such as possible solutions to preserve this specie, the activities are:
- The investigation of the local and regional movements of oceanic manta rays around critical habitats in Ecuador.
- Quantification and description of the human impacts on the local manta rays.
- The delivering of recommendations for reducing these threats through both local and regional management action plans.
- Develop education initiatives to promote manta ray research and sustainable eco-tourism.
